To capitalize on International Talk Like a Pirate Day, a stunt that attracts attention on social media, New York University has prepared “Pirate Lingo 101.”

As you are out and about today, don't be surprised if people are saying, "Ahoy Matey," "Avast," "Aye, Aye Capt'n," "Land ho!" "Hornpipe," and many other pirate-like phrases, because it's International Talk Like a Pirate Day.

Sept 19 has been recognized as International talk like a pirate day, originating in 1995 when two would-be pirates created this cult classic observed around the world. John Baur, better known as Ol’ Chumbucket and Mark Summers, aka Cap’n Slappy were playing racquetball, and one sustained an injury remarking “Aaarrr!”
